Troubleshooting
The wireless set up is pretty reliable. Over the past 18 months little maintenance has been required. However, like all good electronic devices, it needs the occasional reboot. It is also prone to the ‘fat finger’ ie. someone turns it off by mistake. Sometimes there is a power outage. If you have come to this page, it is worth reading now, before there is an outage and you can’t access these directions.
Location
The modem and wireless router are one unit. It sits on the top shelf, in the core, outside the door of theatre 6. There is a small power supply plugged into the wall socket at about elbow level.
There are only TWO actions that will fix nearly all outages that are not related to something outside the building.
1. The power is turned off.
There will be no wireless signal on your computer. You go to the router and there are no lights flashing. The power at the wall may be on or off. If the power on the wall is on, the fan should be running but if there are no flashing lights, the modem is not on. The fan runs independently to the modem.
To Fix: If the power on the wall is off, turn it on. The fan will come on but NOT the modem. The modem does not restart automatically after a power outage. There is a single button on the front of the modem, under the line of indicators lights. PRESS THE BUTTON (see ‘Telstra Button’ on the picture below). Lights should flash, the modem will reboot. All will be good.
Remember: When the power is on at the wall, the fan will be running. If there are no indicator lights on, the modem is not on. Press the on / off button.
2. You have wireless signal but can’t connect to the internet.
The modem is on but needs a reboot. When you look at the modem, the fan should be on and there ought to be some indicator lights on.
To Fix: Switch off the modem and then switch back on. DON’T DO THIS AT THE WALL. If you do, the modem will not reboot. As described above, there is a single button on the front of the modem. Press to turn the modem off and then press to turn back on. All should be good again.
If you have never connected before and can’t access the internet, the problem may be at your end. In any case, if you are having troubles and the above two options do not fix your problem, give me call, SMS or e-mail escarpment.internet@me.com
Unable to Send Mail from POP Account on Mail Client
Problem: Unable to send mail from mail client, eg. Mac Mail but able to receive OK
Cause: In some circumstances the SMTP server configured in your mail client might not be liked by the bigpond server, eg. iinet mail sent through Gasnet.
Solution: You can either add mail.bigpond.com as another SMTP server in your mail client preferences or use the web portal of your service provider. This will never be an issue with web-based e-mail accounts (gmail, hotmail, yahoo).
If you have any issues that you can’t resolve feel free to give me a call.
